Choosing a painting you will still like in ten years
Five decisions separate a painting you like from a painting that works on your wall: the subject, the medium, the size, how it arrives and the frame. Taken in that order, none of them has to be undone.
Hand-painted oil or fine art print
Every painting here is offered in two forms. One is painted with a brush and has a surface you can see across the room; the other is printed and has none. The image, the sizes, the framing and the free shipping are identical.
Choosing the right size
Almost every painting here comes in ten sizes, all of which keep its original proportions. Which one is right is decided by the wall, the distance you see it from and the furniture beneath it, not by the painting.
Rolled, stretched or framed
Three ways to receive the same canvas. One of them decides what you have to do when the parcel is opened, and whether you choose a frame now or leave it open.
Room by room
A painting is judged in the room it hangs in. Light, viewing distance and what the room is for decide the subject and the scale far more than taste does.
Commissioning from your photograph
When the painting you want does not exist, it can be painted from a picture you send. What decides the result is the photograph you choose and the size you settle on before the first brushstroke.
Living with an oil painting
An oil on canvas outlives the people who buy it, provided three things are right: where it hangs, what light falls on it, and what you do - and never do - when it needs cleaning.
Decide in this order
Subject first, because it is the only one of the five nobody can decide for you. Then the medium: a hand-painted oil and a fine art print of the same work are two different objects at two different prices. Then the size, which is set by your wall and not by the painting. Then how it arrives, and only then the frame.
Reversing that order produces the two regrets we hear most: a frame chosen before the size was settled, and a size chosen before the wall was measured.
What is true whichever you choose
Nothing in the collection is picked off a shelf. Each painting is made to order after you buy it, which is why the same work can be offered in two media and ten sizes without a warehouse behind it.
Shipping is free worldwide by express courier whatever the size, the weight and the destination, and no shipping line is added at checkout. The one charge that is not ours is the import duty your own country may levy, described in the shipping terms. A hand-painted oil takes one to four weeks in the workshop; the window for the painting you are looking at is printed on its own page.
If the painting you want does not exist
A place, a face, a house or an animal that no catalogue holds can be painted from a photograph you send. That is a different process, with its own desk and its own timeline: start at the commission page, or read the guide to commissioning first.
Questions people ask
Do I need to read all of them?
No. Each guide settles one decision and is written to stand alone. If you already know which painting you want, the size guide and the delivery guide are the two that change what actually arrives at your door.
Is the price on the site the price I pay?
Yes, with one exception. It covers the painting in the medium, size and presentation you selected, and express shipping to your country. It does not cover the import duties and taxes your own customs authority may charge, because those are set by them and not by us.
Can I ask a person instead of reading?
Yes. An advisor answers questions about size and framing as readily as about custom work, and replies before anything is charged. The contact page is the shortest route.
