A portrait commission is the simplest thing we do and the one people think hardest about. You send a photograph of the person, tell us how large you want the canvas, and an artist paints them in oil. What comes back is not a printed copy of your picture: it is that face, painted, with the brushwork visible when you stand close.
Choosing the photograph
This decision matters more than any other you will make. Look for three things. Focus on the eyes — if they are sharp, the painting has something to be built around. Even light on the face, ideally daylight from a window rather than a direct flash, which flattens features and erases the shadows that give a face its shape. And the expression you actually want to live with, which is often not the posed one.
Resolution matters less than people expect. A recent phone photograph, well lit and in focus, is usually a better source than an old picture from a good camera. If what you have is not usable, we say so before you commit to anything.
Backgrounds, clothing and small changes
Tell us what you want kept and what you want changed. A distracting background can become a plain wash of colour, a wall, or a landscape of your choosing. Clothing can be changed. People sometimes ask us to paint someone in the uniform they wore, or in a garment from a different photograph. All of this is decided before painting starts, in writing, so nothing is a surprise.

A head and shoulders portrait reads well from about 40 x 60 cm; a full-length figure or a portrait meant to hold a room wants considerably more. Size is the main driver of price, complexity the second. Send the photograph and the size you have in mind and you get a firm figure, not a bracket.

What makes a good photograph for a portrait painting?
Sharp eyes, even light on the face, and the expression you want to live with. Daylight from a window beats a direct flash, which flattens the features. A recent phone photograph in good light usually works better than an old picture from a better camera.
Can you paint a portrait from an old or damaged photograph?
Often, yes. Age, grain and small damage can be worked around; what cannot be recovered is a face that is out of focus or too dark to read. Send it and we will tell you honestly whether we can use it before you commit.
Can you change the background or the clothing?
