Landscape commissions are almost always about a specific place: the view from a house someone has left, the beach where a family goes every year, the stretch of coast where a proposal happened. The subject is a location, and the reason is a memory attached to it.
The photograph, and why one is often not enough
A phone photograph flattens a landscape. Distance compresses, the sky blows out to white, and the thing that made you stop and look is not in the frame when you get home. So send more than one: a wide view for the composition, and a closer one for whatever the subject really is — the tree, the rock, the building on the headland.
Photographs taken early or late in the day are far more useful than midday ones. Low sun gives a landscape its structure: long shadows, warm ground, a sky with something in it.
What can be changed, and it is more than you think
A landscape commission is not bound to what the camera recorded. The season can be moved. A grey day can be painted at sunset. Modern intrusions — pylons, road signs, a car park, a caravan — can be left out. Weather can be changed entirely: people ask for the storm they remember rather than the calm afternoon they happened to photograph.

Water and sky are where oil earns its keep, because the paint can be worked wet into wet to get a horizon that dissolves rather than a line drawn across a canvas. Mountains want a large format to be worth doing at all. City views are painted on the same terms, and the advice above about removing modern intrusions applies twice over.
