Paintings we have made
Pet portraits are the commission people put off, and then wish they had not. An animal changes shape over its life and is gone sooner than we are ready for. A painting takes the version of them you knew and puts it on a wall at a scale a photograph never reaches.
The photograph to send
Get down to their eye level. Almost every disappointing pet photograph is taken from human height, looking down, which shortens the muzzle and loses the eyes. Kneel, put the camera where their head is, and take twenty pictures instead of one.
Then look for sharp eyes and daylight. Fur is where the light does its work: a dark room flattens a black dog into a silhouette with nothing for a painter to build. Natural light from a window or an overcast day outside separates the coat into the layers of colour that make a painted animal look alive rather than traced.
Coats, and why texture matters here
An animal's coat is the whole job. A short-haired cat, a wiry terrier and a long-coated collie are three different painting problems, and oil handles all three because the paint itself has body: the brush can lay fur in the direction it grows. Tell us anything a photograph does not show — a patch that reads grey but is really brindle, one ear that always sits differently.
More than one animal, and animals no longer with you
Two pets can be painted into one canvas from two separate photographs. We are also asked, often, to paint an animal that has died, sometimes from the only usable picture the family has. Send what you have. If it can be worked with, we will say so, and if it cannot we will tell you that instead of taking the order.

Pet portraits are commissioned from around 20 cm on the short side up to 150 x 235 cm; a single head reads well from about 40 x 50 cm. Shipping is free worldwide, rolled, stretched or framed. Production usually takes one to four weeks, confirmed in writing with your quote.

Questions before you commission
What is the best photograph for a pet portrait?
One taken at the animal's eye level, in daylight, with the eyes in focus. Photographs taken from human height looking down shorten the muzzle and lose the eyes, which is the single most common reason a pet photograph cannot be used.
Can you paint a pet that has died?
Yes, and we are asked often. Send whatever photographs exist, even imperfect ones. If the picture can be worked with we will say so, and if it genuinely cannot we will tell you that rather than take the order.
Can you paint two pets in one painting?
Yes, and they do not need to be in the same photograph. Send one picture of each and tell us how you would like them arranged.
My dog is black and the photo looks flat. Is that a problem?
It can be. Black coats need light to separate into layers of colour; in a dark room they read as a silhouette. Try again outdoors on an overcast day or near a window, and send us both attempts.
What size works for a pet portrait?
A single head reads well from about 40 x 50 cm. Full-body portraits and multiple animals want more room. We paint from around 20 cm on the short side up to 150 x 235 cm.
How long will it take?
Production usually runs one to four weeks depending on size, coat complexity and texture. Your advisor confirms the timeline with the quote.
