A house portrait is usually commissioned at a hinge in someone's life: a first house bought, a family home sold, a place someone is leaving for good. The building is ordinary and the painting is not, because what is being kept is not the architecture.
How to photograph a house
Three things decide whether the source is any good.
Stand back and go wide. Cross the road if you can. A photograph taken too close distorts the facade and cuts the roofline, and the roofline is what makes a house recognisable.
Go in the morning or the late afternoon. Midday sun flattens a building into a white face with black windows. Low light rakes across brick and render, finds the texture, and casts the shadows that give the walls their depth.
Take one photograph straight on and one from an angle. The straight one records the proportions, the angled one shows how the building sits in space. We use both.
What can be changed
Almost anything you want. Parked cars, wheelie bins, telephone wires and a neighbour's extension can all be left out. The season can be changed: a house photographed in bare February can be painted in full summer, or under snow. A tree that has since been felled can be put back from an older photograph. Say what you want removed and what you want restored.
Estate agent photographs and old pictures
If the house has been sold and you no longer have access, an estate agent listing photograph is often usable, and so is a printed photograph from decades ago. Send what exists. We will tell you before you commit whether it can carry a painting.

Questions before you commission
How should I photograph my house for a painting?

Often, yes. Listing photographs are usually taken from a good distance in reasonable light, which is exactly what we need. Send it and we will tell you honestly before you commit.
