Close enough to see the brush

This is the difference a photograph cannot show you and a print cannot fake: paint with body, laid in the direction the subject moves.

The process

How your commission is painted

Send a photograph of each person

Separate pictures are fine, and often better than one group photograph. Say who is who.

Describe the scene

Setting, clothing, how you want everyone placed. We confirm the price and timeline in writing.

Painted as one canvas

Every figure painted at one scale in one light, in oil. You see photographs before it ships.

Families are rarely photographed well together. Someone is blinking, someone was not there that year, and the one picture where everybody looks right was taken on a phone in a restaurant. A commissioned painting solves this in a way no photograph can: it does not have to have happened in one moment.

Building one painting from several photographs

This is the part most people do not know is possible. Send a separate photograph of each person, taken years apart if that is what exists, and tell us how you want them placed. We paint them into one scene, at one scale, in one light. Grandparents who died before the grandchildren were born are painted into the same canvas as them regularly.

What we need from you is clarity about faces: one good, sharp, well-lit photograph of each person, and a note about who is who. A group photograph where everyone is small and slightly out of focus is a much harder source than five separate clear ones.

Setting, clothing and the number of figures

You choose the setting: a plain painted ground, the room you actually live in, a garden, a coastline. Clothing can be taken from a different photograph or simply described. Every one of these choices is agreed in writing before an artist starts.

The number of figures is the main thing that moves the price after size. Each additional face is a portrait in itself, and a family of six is genuinely six times the portrait work of one.

Size matters more here than anywhere

This is the commission people most often order too small. Five faces on a 40 x 60 cm canvas leaves each face the size of a coin. As a rule, once you are past three figures, think in terms of 100 cm and up on the long side. We paint up to 150 x 235 cm, and an advisor will tell you honestly if the size you asked for is too small for the number of people in it.

Delivery and time

Free worldwide shipping, rolled, stretched ready to hang, or framed. Production usually takes one to four weeks depending on size and the number of figures, confirmed with your quote.

Questions before you commission

Can you paint family members from different photographs into one painting?

Yes, and it is one of the most common family commissions. Send a clear photograph of each person, taken at any time, and tell us how you want them placed. We paint them into a single scene at one scale and in one light.

Can you include someone who has died?

Yes. Send the best photograph that exists of them along with the others. Families ask for this regularly, and it is often the reason the painting is commissioned.

What size should a family portrait be?

Larger than most people first think. Five faces on a 40 x 60 cm canvas leaves each face about the size of a coin. Past three figures, think in terms of 100 cm and up on the long side. If the size you ask for is too small for the number of people, we will say so.

Does the price depend on how many people are in it?

Yes. After size, the number of figures is the main factor: each additional face is a portrait in its own right. A family of six is genuinely more work than a single portrait.

Can you change what everyone is wearing?

Yes. Clothing can be taken from another photograph or simply described in words. Agree it with your advisor before painting begins.

How long does a family portrait take?

Production usually runs one to four weeks, depending on the size and the number of figures. Your advisor confirms the timeline with your quote.
