يتقدم قائد روماني في درع مذهّب لامع، عباءة حمراء داكنة ترفرف خلفه، نظرته ثابتة وحازمة بينما يقود رجاله إلى المعركة. إلى جانبه، حامل اللواء يرفع النسر الذهبي عالياً، وتتقدم صفوف من الجنود بخوذات برونزية ودروع حمراء في صفوف منضبطة تحت سماء عاصفة مثقلة. يسلط الضوء بقوة على درع القائد ومعيار النسر، مما يجذب العين عبر التكوين بينما تتلاشى الرتب البعيدة في درجات ألوان باردة ومغبرة. إنه مشهد عزيمة وقيادة، مليء بالحركة المحتجزة قبل الشحن. مرسومة يدوياً بالزيت على قماش وتُصنع حسب الطلب بالحجم الذي تختاره، تجلب هذه اللوحة وزن وانضباط جحافل روما إلى دراسة أو مكتب أو أي جدار مبني لحضور جريء وموثوق.
