رجل دولة جالس مرتدياً معطفاً أسود وربطة عنق يستدير نحو المشاهد، ويده مستندة على ذراع الكرسي المنحوتة، واليد الأخرى مسترخية على ركبته. يسقط ضوء مصباح دافئ على وجهه وياقته النشوية بينما تتوهج خلفه ستارة ذهبية ثقيلة، وعلى طاولة جانبية صغيرة فنجان خزفي ومصباح نحاسي مزخرف. تبقى الألوان منخفضة وعنبرية، بنية وذهبية عسلية تكسرها فقط بياض الياقة، مما يعطي المشهد هدوءاً مهيباً بدلاً من أي إحساس بالحركة. يبدو كدراسة رسمية لسلطة هادئة، نوع البورتريه المناسب لمكتبة أو دراسة أو مدخل يتوقف فيه الزوار للنظر. مرسوم يدوياً بالزيت على قماش، يُصنع حسب الطلب بالحجم الذي تختاره، بحيث يمكن مطابقة مقياسه وحضوره مع الجدار الذي سيعلق عليه.
